The idea is an interactive music based exhibit that uses cartridges of different notes each. When you plug them into the 4 slots they connect to an air supply that when activated pushes air through the system making multiple pitches that are either in harmony or dissonance

Great video explaining how a melodica works.

Physics

Components and Mechanism

  1. Bellows: Acts as the air pump, pushing and pulling air through the instrument.
  2. Reeds: Metal strips that vibrate to produce sound.
  3. Reed Blocks: Hold the reeds in place and direct airflow.
  4. Valves and Pallets: Control which reed receives air when a key or button is pressed.
  5. Keyboard and Buttons: Mechanisms for selecting specific reeds by opening corresponding valves.

Airflow and Sound Production

  1. Air Pressure and Flow: When the bellows are compressed or expanded, air is pushed or pulled through the reed blocks. The movement of the bellows changes the pressure inside the accordion, creating a pressure differential that forces air through the instrument.
  2. Reed Vibration: Each reed is a flexible strip fixed at one end. When air flows past a reed, it causes the reed to vibrate. This vibration occurs at a natural frequency determined by the physical properties of the reed (length, mass, tension, and material).
